The collagelike paintings of Berlin based artist Jonathan Esperester resemble surreal stage set designs. The seemingly magic compositions point out the sometimes surreal traces we leave behind which develop an allegorical relevance through their poetic narrative. The partly nostalgic aesthetic takes on a quasi-religious quality and is inspired by his early fascination with figurative and especially sacred art. Esperester has a deep interest in the materiality of his works. He experiments with oil and acrylic paints, air-brush, ink, windowcolor, colored pencils and charcoal – the mix of materials emphasize the ambiguous variety of aesthetics. Mixed media becomes his medium of choice to visualize the complexity of our world. The palpable ambivalence of his works attempts to make the incomprehensible complexity of the world tangible and thus develops a kind of magic that captures the spirit of the times in the mirror of the past.
