The Japanese artist Yuichiro Sato works in Kuhankoski/Laukaa, Finland, where he creates stunningly accurate drawings of the Finnish nature. The pencil and charcoal renderings display his fascination towards the Finnish nature. Sato takes walks in his nearby forests and photographs them, which act as the basis for his immersive and tranquil large-scale works. For Sato, the nature is cosmic in its countless parts and an endless inspiration for him. Sato uses the most basic tools in his work; a charcoal pencil and rubber. Yet, due to his exceptional draughtsman-skills, he is able to create magically realistic portrayals of the nature, where every single detail of the landscape is meticulously observed and hand-drawn on the paper. The Japanese traditional art, called “Japanese Painting”, has influenced Sato significantly and is the basis for his technique. What is transferred onto the paper, is not always the visible world, but also the invisible; the smell, sense of touch and sound of the forest. When gazing at the works, the viewer has a strong feeling of actually being in the forest. “My encounter with the Finnish nature gave me new inspiration, and changed me. The unfamiliar land showed me that when one looks carefully at familiar things, countless microcosms come into view.”, says Sato of his experience in Finland.“The color of the sky stretching wide outside the window, a single ray of sunlight shining in the forest, moist moss and bracken glimmering in a shade of jade green: I never cease to be astonished, time and time again. After the deep feeling of amazement, I am slowly, quietly filled with gratitude for that stunning scenery, and for being able to live here.”
