MARY CASSATT (1845–1926)
PORTRAIT OF MASTER ST. PIERRE AS A YOUNG BOY
The pastel “Portrait of Master St. Pierre as a Young Boy” was purchased at auction in 2015.
We infrequently buy at auction, however, we were contacted about this artwork and informed of its stellar provenance and exhibition history, and we were able to acquire the artwork for less than the lower end of the estimate of $350,00 to $550,000.
It has a great provenance. It was owned by Joan and Lester Avnet of New York, major collectors of Old Master and Modern works on paper.
The pastel was exhibited nationally in 1968 through 1970.
After Mr. Avnet’s death, Mrs. Avnet donated 180 works on paper to the Museum of Modern Art.
Mrs. Avnet became a private art dealer based in New York and Palm Beach and placed the pastel “Portrait of Master St. Pierre as a Young Boy” with a private collection in 1973, where it remained until 2015.
