Birthday Cake,2022
Oil paint, oil bar and collage on canvas
说明
Florence Hutchings utilizes collage in her boldly coloured paintings that depict various interior scenes. Borrowing from cubism, the items and lines are depicted in chunky, blocky forms and the world of Huthings is shown in a sort of flattened manner with two dimensional objects, which interferes with the viewer’s depth perception. At first upon glancing Hutching’s works, the viewer might not even realize what they are looking at, but after a while the forms fall into order and begin making sense and that makes for a compelling viewing experience.
Hutchings explains the two-part painting “Birthday Cake” (2021-2022): “When making this piece I really liked playing around with the idea of the birthday cake alone on the table, the candles still lit, the plates ready for a slice. The more I looked at the painting though, I felt the birthday cake is not alone - for me the plates, the forks and even the table legs seemed to be people. I personally feel they have just as much character as if I had depicted an actual person. Collage was so important in making this, the pink paper was found in a second hand shop, it had so much character as there were so many shades to it, from a neon pink to a dusky pink, and this really made the process more exciting.”
Hutchings received her BFA with First Class Honours from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2019. Since then, Hutchings has shown in several group and solo exhibitions in Europe, USA and Asia.
